Aging Nose Dallas

Aging Nose Procedure
The nose definitely ages over one’s lifetime but oftentimes less significantly than the remainder of the face. Oftentimes what appears to be aging in one’s 40s and 50s is really that the face has shrunk or reduced in size vis-à-vis the nose. The nose made up of mainly hard architecture, bone, and cartilage, as opposed to soft tissue like fat and skin, can remain relatively impervious to volume contraction that the face undergoes earlier on.

Nevertheless, the nose can and does age. A classic example is shown in the drawings by Leonardo da Vinci in which the nose tip looks droopy and a nasal hump is shown that was not present in youth. The witch’s nose is the most overt example of an older female nose due to the nasal hump and the sagging nasal tip. The reason that the nose ages is mainly due to the loss of the supporting structures. There is a “scroll” or interlocking between the middle third of the nose (upper lateral cartilages) and the lower third of the nose (lower lateral cartilages) that begins to unravel leading to the nasal tip to droop and sag. The upper lateral cartilage can also start to separate from the nasal bones causing a definable nasal hump to appear. This aging may also lead to functional problems like impaired nasal breathing. There are other conditions like rhinophyma in which the oil glands of the nose become enlarged and can lead to a visible deformity. Dr. Lam corrects all of these conditions for the aging nose.

What’s interesting is that even if the nose has not substantially aged if the person has a sagging nasal tip or a prominent nasal hump, those two conditions can actually make the nose appear older, so rhinoplasty to improve these two issues can make the nose appear younger and thereby improve the overall facial rejuvenation, especially if performed in conjunction with other rejuvenative therapies like fillers, Botox, facelift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), and/or fat grafting.
