While Dr. Lam performs the full gamut of facial plastic surgery, the one procedure that goes very well for certain individuals is chin augmentation with a chin implant. At times a receded chin can make a nose appear larger in size, and rhinoplasty can also reduce a nose so much without causing problems. Trying to overreduce a nose to match a receded chin can lead to functional problems or the overlying skin not to redrape properly on a nose. If you are undecided whether to undergo chin augmentation, it can always be done at a later date but it makes the most sense to combine both procedures to save in recovery time and cost.

Chin Implant/Augmentation (Ancillary Procedure to Rhinoplasty)

The type of chin augmentation that Dr. Lam prefers to perform is the use of a silastic (silicone) extended anatomic implant that extends over about a third of the jawline. The reason for using this type of implant is manifold. First, silicone is bioinert, does not cause a tissue reaction, highly stable for the rest of your life, does not shift or migrate, should not lose volume or projection over time, does not need to be stabilized with screws or other devices, and is easily removed without hurting the surrounding tissues should you ever decide to change the size of the implant or to remove it. In contrast, Gore-Tex implants lose projection over time and are very difficult to remove without damaging surrounding tissues. Med-Por implants are even more difficult to remove if there is an issue as well as they risk infection.

The extended anatomic version that Dr. Lam uses makes the entire jawline profile harmonious in nature since it tapers laterally on the jawbone rather than ending abruptly shortly. It can partially camouflage a jowl from aging and gives the entire jawline a better structure. Contrast this with the older style “button” implants that did not give adequate projection, became unstable over time, did not harmoniously blend with the surrounding bone, and mostly need replacement over time. Dr. Lam is as skilled with chin augmentation as with nose surgery and performs a large number of these procedures with or without simultaneous rhinoplasty to achieve desirable outcome.
